On Monday, August 10, 2026, US President Donald Trump demanded that Iran provide compensation for victims of attacks, conflicts, and domestic repression attributed to Tehran. This demand introduces a new condition to ongoing negotiations over reopening the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

Trump responded after Iran reiterated that Washington must compensate it for damages caused by over five months of US and Israeli strikes before the waterway can be fully reopened. Writing on Truth Social, Trump stated, “I see that Representatives of the Islamic Republic of Iran are asking for compensation for the damage done to them during the last five month Military Conflict (started because, THEY WILL NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON), even though it was never mentioned in any of our negotiations or meetings!”

He described the idea as "interesting" and declared he would start demanding compensation from Iran for all those killed or gravely wounded by roadside bombs and various conflicts. Trump also called for compensation for families of protesters killed in Iran over the last 50 years, including the 52,000 reportedly killed in the last five months.

Additionally, Trump mentioned compensation for victims of the October 2000 bombing of the USS Cole in Yemen.

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council stated over the weekend that the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed until the US “corrects its behavior,” including ending threats against Iran, permanently ending the war, lifting the naval blockade, and withdrawing its military presence.

Trump acknowledged that the US is "only semi-negotiating" with Iran and noted that the deal would grant Iran partial control over incoming traffic, a concession viewed by some as significant.

He instructed his representatives to firmly include the compensation demand in all future negotiations.
