SEOULLater this month, South Korean and U.S. forces will conduct their annual large-scale military exercises known as Ulchi Freedom Shield. These drills, which include joint activities such as river-crossing exercises in Yeoju, South Korea, are designed to bolster defenses against regional threats.

The exercises come at a time when North Korea is reportedly gaining experience in supporting Russia, adding complexity to the security environment. The joint drills also support ongoing efforts to transfer wartime operational command (OPCON) authority from the U.S. to Seoul, marking a significant step in South Korea's military autonomy.

The Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises underscore the continuing military cooperation between South Korea and the U.S. in maintaining stability on the Korean Peninsula and the broader region.
