Comic Con Astana, Central Asia's biggest pop culture festival, marked its fifth anniversary with a vibrant four-day event in Kazakhstan's capital. The festival transformed the city, attracting thousands of visitors including international film stars, cosplay enthusiasts, gamers, and artists.
Held across two venues, including the Alau Ice Palace which became a colorful cosplay parade, the festival featured hundreds of events. Danish actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, known for his role as Jaime Lannister in Game of Thrones, was among the headline guests. He met fans, signed autographs during his first visit to Kazakhstan, and reflected on his role, saying he never imagined an alternative ending for Jaime Lannister and feels fortunate to have been part of a series still watched years after its finale.
Cosplay competitions were a highlight, with applications coming from more than 20 countries. Comic Con Astana Executive Producer Natalya Abrashkina noted the selection process was extremely rigorous. One participant shared, "I saw the picture on the internet and thought, 'Why not make it?' It's my first time competing, so I'd be happy even with third place."
The festival celebrated creativity and self-expression, with attendees dressed as mythical creatures, anime heroes, comic book characters, and original fantasy creations. Many visitors came in costume, while others queued for photos. The event also included gaming tournaments and one of the region's largest cosplay competitions.
During a press conference, Coster-Waldau revealed he visited Astana's Baiterek Monument and made a wish.
