Mukalla, Yemen – Each year, a mild weather spell known as Al-Baldah transforms the southern Yemeni coast, bringing relief from the region’s typically scorching summer heat. This year, the phenomenon attracted roughly 35,000 visitors to Mukalla, the capital of Hadramout governorate, according to official figures from the provincial tourism office. This marks an increase from 20,000 visitors last year and 30,000 in 2024.

The cooler temperatures and refreshing sea breeze draw thousands of beachgoers to the Arabian Sea shoreline, where locals like 15-year-old Abdulrahman Badr and his friend Tareq prepare traditional bakhmari bread for the crowds. Residents and tourists alike enjoy the beaches before sunrise, taking advantage of the rare mild conditions.

A representative from the provincial tourism office told Al Jazeera, “The season represents the peak of annual tourist activity, as Mukalla and coastal cities such as al-Shihr, Hami, and Burum transform into vibrant destinations receiving hundreds of thousands of visitors. This influx revitalises hotels, parks and commercial markets, reviving the city after periods of calm and local economic stagnation.”

The annual influx provides a rare economic boost to the region, supporting local vendors and businesses that often face challenges due to Yemen’s ongoing difficulties.

Meanwhile, other regional issues persist, including Yemen’s deteriorating infrastructure affecting water access for villagers in Taiz and hundreds of tourists stranded on a Yemeni island amid mainland tensions. Additionally, talks between Iran and Oman on reopening the strategic Strait of Hormuz have been described as 'positive' by the US.
