Hackers recently attempted a series of sophisticated cyberattacks targeting major Wall Street financial services firms and money managers, according to sources familiar with the matter. Some of the world's largest hedge funds and several private equity firms were targeted, with the sources requesting anonymity due to the confidential nature of the incidents.
The attacks involved phone calls aimed at tricking employees into granting access or revealing sensitive information. Point72 Asset Management confirmed to investors on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, that it faced a hacker attack but indicated no customer information was stolen during the incident.
Other hedge funds, including Two Sigma Investments and Citadel, were also targeted in attempts to breach their information systems. Two Sigma did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Cybersecurity experts note that attempts to infiltrate major financial institutions are routine, with phone-call tactics remaining widely used due to their effectiveness.
In response to growing cyber threats, the White House announced earlier this year the formation of a working group uniting AI developers and critical infrastructure operators to share threat intelligence and coordinate cyber defenses.
