Jordan Herrera, an attorney, Air Force veteran, and former Missouri assistant attorney general, won the Democratic nomination on Tuesday, August 5th, 2026, in Missouri’s newly redrawn 4th Congressional District. Herrera defeated Hartzell Gray, a 33-year-old former Kansas City radio host and tenant organizer who had gained national attention after criticizing "sell-out Democrats" during a Twitch livestream with Hasan Piker.

Gray, who built his campaign on small-dollar fundraising and progressive support, including the Kansas City chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America—the group’s first federal race endorsement—raised over $30,000 following the Piker appearance. Despite this backing, Herrera prevailed in a seven-way primary.

The 4th District includes part of Kansas City and extends south through suburban and rural areas of Missouri. Herrera will face Republican incumbent Mark Alford in the November general election in this GOP-leaning district.

Fox News correspondent Lucas Tomlinson noted recent Democratic socialist wins in primary elections, while Massachusetts Democrat Jake Auchincloss discussed on "Fox News Sunday" the appeal of socialism among young Americans and addressed controversial comments by socialist candidates.
