President Mamadi Doumbouya of Guinea left Conakry on Monday, August 5th, 2026, for a family holiday in Greece. The Guinean presidency described this as the country’s first officially announced annual leave by a sitting head of state.

Doumbouya was seen off at the airport by the prime minister, military commanders, officials, and diplomats. According to the presidency, the break follows years of intensive state management and aims to promote government transparency. Authorities emphasized that state functions and institutional operations will continue as usual during his absence.

Ahead of the president’s departure, the Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces issued a statement to quell speculation. He affirmed that the armed forces will maintain stability and safeguard territorial integrity. The statement also warned the public against falling prey to online misinformation during the president’s trip.

The military’s statement underscored its significant role in Guinea’s governance since September 2021, when special forces ousted former president Alpha Condé.
