Republican Representative Chuck Edwards of North Carolina announced early on Wednesday morning, August 5, 2026, that he is withdrawing from his re-election campaign. Edwards stated, "After much prayer and reflection, I’ve decided to withdraw from my re-election campaign. I will complete my current term. Serving Western North Carolina has been the honor of my life. Thank you for your trust, prayers, and support. God bless WNC and America."

This announcement came two days after the House Ethics Committee released a report recommending that Edwards be censured for engaging in persistent unprofessional and inappropriate conduct toward two young female staffers. The committee noted that while Edwards denied any intent of sexual or romantic advances, his behavior—such as providing lavish gifts, making comments about appearance and dress, inviting staffers to intimate dinners and vacations, and sending affectionate notes—could reasonably be interpreted as such.

However, the committee found no evidence that Edwards engaged in sexual activity with or explicitly propositioned any individual under his employ. The report also acknowledged that Edwards was aware his excessive attention had led to rumors and innuendo within the office.

Edwards and his wife recently sold their McDonald's restaurant business, allowing him to focus more on his congressional duties representing western North Carolina.
