German authorities have initiated an investigation following the discovery of a drone carrying what was described as an "unknown notable device" near the runway at Leipzig/Halle airport on Wednesday, August 5th, 2026. Police removed the detonator from the device as part of their investigation.

The incident caused the airport’s north runway to close for about two hours before reopening, while the south runway remained closed due to scheduled maintenance. Several flights, including a passenger aircraft, were diverted to other airports after a flying object was reported near the airport shortly before midnight.

Additionally, a second flying object reportedly collided with a freight aircraft after the latter aborted its landing due to the runway closure. The freight aircraft diverted to Hannover airport, where officials found slight damage during an inspection.

This event coincides with other global incidents, including a suicide bombing in Pakistan’s Swat Valley and bomb disposal efforts in Le Porge following wildfires that unearthed World War II shells.
