Douglas Ollivant decisively won the Republican primary on August 5, 2026, defeating fellow political newcomers Philip Harding and Rick Smithers to become the GOP candidate for Virginia's 7th Congressional District. Ollivant earned 56.6% of the vote, compared to Harding's 30.7% and Smithers' 12.8%.

The district is currently represented by incumbent Rep. Eugene Vindman, whose twin brother, Alexander Vindman, is a former National Security Council Director for European affairs and testified against President Donald Trump during the first impeachment attempt in 2019. Vindman holds a seat in a district considered a true swing area, encompassing parts of Prince William County and surrounding regions.

Ollivant is a retired Army officer who served as the National Security Council director for Iraq during the George W. Bush administration. Harding reported raising $125,916 before the primary election, while no fundraising data was reported for Smithers.

As Democrats aim to retain the seat in the November general election, Republicans view the district as a potential pickup amid efforts to maintain control of Congress during a challenging midterm election year.
