On July 30, 2026, several capybaras entered the Mato Grosso Legislative Assembly in Cuiabá, Brazil, surprising lawmakers who were preparing for a vote. The animals calmly explored the government building, briefly drawing attention away from official business. Video footage captured by legislative staffer Nayara Bueno showed the capybaras moving through the entrance while workers attempted to guide them outside.
According to Bueno, "They show up here quite often, so we’ve gotten used to seeing them," as reported by The Associated Press. Officials confirmed that the rodents’ visit did not cause any damage to the state legislature.
Capybaras are highly social animals that typically travel in groups and can weigh up to about 175 pounds. Their presence in the legislative building has become a recurring occurrence.
