The United States National Guard deployment in Washington, DC is projected to cost approximately $1.4 billion through January 2029, according to a Defense Department estimate provided to Congress. This figure covers fiscal years 2027 to 2029 and is based on an average of 2,500 Guard members remaining in the capital.

The estimate was released in response to inquiries from Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts. Warren criticized the expenditure, stating, “While American families are getting flattened by skyrocketing costs, Donald Trump is spending $1.4bn to keep troops on the streets in Washington for years on end. The National Guard are not pawns and taxpayer dollars are not a piggy bank for Trump’s political stunts.”

The Pentagon confirmed last month that the Guard mission would continue until January 20, 2029, or until terminated by the president. Meanwhile, Hawaii announced it will bring home its 27 National Guard members later this month following the Freedom 250 Grand Prix.

The deployment has faced widespread criticism regarding its cost and duration.
