Talarico acknowledged the complexity of issues such as transgender athletes in sports, stating that these are areas where policy solutions could be reached. However, he accused politicians like Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton of exploiting these issues to "rile people up, to divide us, to distract us, in order to win power for themselves."

The debate over transgender participation in sports has intensified recently, with the U.S. Supreme Court ruling at the end of June 2026 that states can prohibit transgender girls from competing on girls' and women's school sports teams. This decision upheld bans in Idaho and West Virginia in a 6-3 ruling.

Talarico and Paxton are expected to compete later this year for a U.S. Senate seat in Texas. Paxton has been outspoken against transgender athletes competing in categories aligned with their gender identity and previously called Talarico a "left-wing lunatic obsessed with distorting Christianity to put boys in girls’ sports."

Talarico emphasized his campaign is inclusive, stating, "This is a campaign of, by and for all Texans," and rejected the notion of winning by "selling people out."
