Hong Kong has reported its first fatal pediatric influenza case of 2026 following the death of a seven-year-old boy on Tuesday, August 4th, nine days after he first showed symptoms.

According to the Centre for Health Protection (CHP), the boy was previously in good health before developing a cough and runny nose on July 27th, followed by a fever on Saturday, August 1st. His condition worsened on Monday, August 3rd, when he became less responsive.

He was admitted in critical condition to the pediatric intensive care unit at Princess Margaret Hospital in Kwai Chung on August 3rd. A respiratory specimen tested positive for influenza A (H3) virus. The boy was diagnosed with influenza A infection complicated by shock and encephalopathy, a condition affecting brain function.

The child had received a seasonal influenza vaccination under the 2025-26 scheme. He had not traveled during the incubation period; however, a household contact had previously tested positive for influenza and recovered after a mild illness.

This case marks a significant health concern as Hong Kong continues to monitor influenza activity in the region.
