Wales Football Association has formally withdrawn its support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s bid for re-election for the 2027-2031 term. This decision follows the collapse of FIFA’s ambitious plan to raise up to $4.2 billion by selling approximately a 20 percent stake in a new entity overseeing competitions, including the World Cup.

The plan was abandoned after strong resistance from stakeholders, marking a significant setback for Infantino’s leadership. Regional confederations UEFA (Europe) and CONCACAF (North and Central America) have also expressed a loss of confidence in Infantino’s leadership. UEFA has issued a document preservation order to prevent destruction of emails, files, or data amid expected investigations.

The Welsh FA stated on Monday that it would no longer support Infantino’s re-election, highlighting the repercussions of the failed initiative. Experts have noted that while Infantino’s re-election had seemed assured, the backlash reveals dissatisfaction among FIFA members and could complicate his path ahead of the March 2027 Congress in Morocco.
