A recent release of former NIH Director Anthony Fauci's diary entries and emails, made public thanks to Senator Rand Paul, has sparked renewed debate over the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. The documents reveal Fauci’s extensive media appearances and his excitement over positive coverage by major outlets, as well as his private communications that differed significantly from his public statements.

Fauci also expressed personal friendships with celebrities such as Joan Baez and Barbra Streisand, stating that he and Baez were "made for each other."

In the wake of these revelations, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. confronted CNN, criticizing the network for what he described as "scaring people" during the pandemic. The confrontation included a clash with CNN’s Dana Bash, who, according to Fauci’s texts, had privately communicated with him during the crisis.

Fauci testified before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on July 29, 2026, where his diary entries were expected to be a topic of questioning. The documents include an entry from October 2020, just before Fauci urged Americans to cancel Thanksgiving gatherings.

Kennedy’s criticism also touched on the demonization and silencing of doctors who dissented from Fauci’s guidance. The debate highlights ongoing tensions over media coverage and public health messaging during the pandemic.
