Nantucket, a small luxury island located 30 miles off the coast of Massachusetts, is experiencing significant disruption as social media influencers and an influx of tourists transform local life.

Recently, images showcasing Nantucket's weathered-gray cottages, colorful hydrangeas, and pristine beaches have become widespread on platforms like TikTok and Instagram. This exposure has contributed to a surge in tourism, with the island drawing an estimated 2 million visitors annually, according to the Nantucket Current.

Longtime residents and visitors have voiced concerns about the changes. A 23-year-old lifetime Nantucket resident told Fox News Digital, "[Nantucket] has become something it wasn't before," describing the island as having evolved from a "rustic New England vacation spot" over the past 20 years. The resident added, "It's transforming into something that [residents] don't recognize, and it makes them very upset."

Similarly, a Connecticut resident who has spent summers in Sconset for 38 years noted that the island "feels different," with downtown areas becoming "more noisy and crowded than before."

The island's exclusivity, once maintained by its limited accessibility—"You either have to fly or take the ferry," as noted by residents—is now challenged by the growing crowds and social media-driven attention.

Notable figures such as Martha Stewart have been known to visit Nantucket for local auctions and corporate retreats, further highlighting the island's appeal.

This evolving dynamic has prompted local efforts to manage tourism and maintain the island's character, including hiring patrol 'docents' to monitor visitors.
