Morocco has officially named a major highway after former US President Donald Trump, according to a letter from King Mohammed VI. The letter, dated July 2 and published in early August 2026, was addressed to Trump and described the renaming as "a personal expression of my high regard."

The highway, formerly known as the Tiznit-Dakhla route, stretches 1,055 kilometers (655 miles) and connects the north and south of Morocco. It passes through Western Sahara, a territory largely controlled and claimed by Morocco but disputed by the Polisario Front, an armed group advocating independence for the Sahrawi people.

King Mohammed VI praised Trump’s "historic recognition... of Morocco's sovereignty over its Sahara," stating that this recognition would "forever be etched in the memory of Moroccans, from generation to generation." He also noted that although relations between the two countries have always been friendly, they had never been as "vigorous and fruitful" as during Trump's two presidential terms.

In 2020, during Trump's first term, the US recognized Morocco's claim over Western Sahara as part of a deal in which Morocco agreed to normalize relations with Israel. Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony, is considered a "non-self-governing territory" by the United Nations and has been the subject of one of Africa's longest conflicts.

Trump had previously thanked King Mohammed VI on social media for the honor, expressing his hope to travel the entire length of the highway someday.
