Secretary of State Marco Rubio revealed that he initially “hated” a photo of himself sitting on a couch in the Oval Office that became a viral meme following a tense meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky last year.
Speaking during an interview on Fox News’s "My View with Lara Trump" aired Saturday, Rubio explained, “Well, the meme thing, you know, was interesting because when it first came out, I hated that picture, you know, because what happened is in that couch, if you don’t have a pillow behind your back, you kind of sink.”
He added that the meme eventually took on a life of its own and became humorous, noting, "And then it turned into this other thing, and it was fine and it’s funny. I don’t really follow it very closely, but people have shown me pictures out there.”
The photo is often used as a meme when President Trump assigns Rubio additional roles within his second administration. Rubio currently serves as interim national security adviser and previously acted as head of the United States Agency for International Development in 2025.
Rubio also mentioned, “We have a good friend here that works at the White House, Dan Scavino, made a nice board for me.”
During the interview, Lara Trump asked Rubio about his political career and personal growth. Rubio reflected, “Certainly, I’m a different person at 55 than I was at 25 or even 35, because I have 20 and 30 years of experience in between in life and in work that inform that.”
His multiple assignments have fueled speculation about a potential 2028 presidential bid, especially given his prominent involvement in key Trump administration priorities such as the war in Iran and peace negotiations involving Russia and Ukraine.
