Japanese Airlines Report Record Sales but Profits Shrink Amid High Fuel Costs

Japan Airlines (JAL) and All Nippon Airways (ANA), Japan's two largest commercial passenger airlines, have reported record sales but sharply reduced profits amid rising fuel costs.

On Monday, August 3rd, 2026, Japan Airlines announced an 80% fall in its quarterly profit. This follows a similar trend at rival ANA Holdings, which also reported record revenues but suffered a major hit to its bottom line. The surge in fuel prices, attributed to the ongoing Iran war, has forced both carriers to increase fare surcharges since April 2026.

Both airlines operate extensive domestic and international networks, with Haneda Airport in Tokyo serving as a major hub.
