The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has traced a recent cyclospora outbreak to shredded iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico. Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that causes cyclosporiasis, with diarrhea being the most common symptom.
As the restaurant industry responds to this health concern, many fast-food chains have menu items that do not contain shredded lettuce, providing safer alternatives for customers.
At McDonald's, the standard hamburger does not include lettuce and consists of a beef patty, ketchup, mustard, chopped onions, and dill pickle slices on a bun. Other lettuce-free options at McDonald's include the Filet-O-Fish—a breaded and fried fish filet with tartar sauce and American cheese—the Double Cheeseburger, Quarter Pounder with Cheese, and Chicken McNuggets.
Taco Bell also offers several lettuce-free choices such as the Bean Burrito, Beefy 5-Layer Burrito, Cheesy Roll Up, Cheesy Bean and Rice Burrito, and Quesadillas with cheese, chicken, or steak.
Consumers looking to avoid lettuce amid the outbreak can consider these options while the FDA continues its investigation.
