In Guanabara Bay, Brazil, a novel environmental initiative is underway to tackle oil pollution using human hair barriers. The Brazilian non-governmental organization Fiotrar has installed filters filled with human hair across the Bom Jesus inlet, attached to an existing floating orange rubbish barrier that prevents trash from entering the mangroves.
"The idea is the oil that flows here be absorbed by that hair barrier so they are attached to the orange rubbish barrier, which floats, and we use it as support for the Fiotrar barrier," explained Ana Beatriz Gonçalves, an environmental engineer responsible for the weekly maintenance of these barriers.
At Rio's Federal University, researcher Mariana Robrahn detailed the technology behind the filters: "We use hairs of different formats of different kinds of people, and we can make these filters... to filter out oil, biodiesel, and other substances that pollute the water."
Chemist Caroline Carvalho added that the barrier can remain in the sea for up to four months, effectively containing pollution from boats, illegal dumping, and other sources. Demonstrations showed that each gram of hair can absorb up to five grams of oil, with oil held in the hair while water passes through cleanly.
The project sources hair from ten participating salons, which must collect hair before it is mixed with other debris. Zoologist Eduardo Viana de Almeida highlighted the ecological importance of the effort, noting that oil can suffocate marine animals by waterproofing their gills and causing other physiological harm.
This innovative use of human hair as an eco-friendly barrier offers a promising protective measure for vulnerable coastal ecosystems.
