US President Donald Trump announced on Sunday, August 2nd, 2026, that he is cancelling planned strikes on Iran after Tehran and several unspecified Middle Eastern countries requested a postponement, citing that the "perimeters of a deal" had been agreed.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump outlined that the deal would include the "Immediate, Complete, and Total OPENING OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT, and an end to Iran’s nuclear threat." He stated, "I have agreed, for the future benefit of the WORLD and, likewise, the survival of a successful and prosperous Iran, to cancel the attack, subject to being able to rapidly make a DEAL," adding that "The Country of Israel joins me in this commitment."

Trump also warned that US forces remain "locked and loaded and ready to go," emphasizing that the cancellation is conditional on swiftly finalizing the agreement.

This announcement follows a period of heightened tensions after Tehran launched ballistic missiles against US forces in the Middle East, prompting the US to retaliate with strikes targeting dozens of Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps locations, including missile and drone facilities and military command centers. The US Central Command stated these strikes aimed to reduce threats to American forces, commercial shipping, and neighboring Gulf countries.

Amid the ongoing volatility, the US State Department issued a security update advising Americans in the Middle East to exercise caution and be prepared for flight cancellations, airspace closures, and travel disruptions.

Earlier on Friday, Trump had expressed doubt about the peace deal's prospects and threatened to strike Iran "very hard." The recent cancellation marks a significant shift in the US approach toward Iran.
