Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio) was hospitalized on Sunday, August 2, 2026, following a hit-and-run car crash, according to her office and local authorities. Kaptur, 80, was a passenger in a vehicle heading to a church service when the car was struck. She is reported to be "active, alert, and being treated for non-life threatening injuries."

Officers from the Toledo Police Department responded to the scene at approximately 10:48 a.m. Ohio law treats hit-skip the same as hit-and-run, both indicating failure to stop after an accident.

Kaptur’s office expressed gratitude for the quick response from Toledo Police and Fire Departments and medical professionals assisting those involved. They also thanked constituents for their support and said the congresswoman looks forward to returning to a full schedule soon.

Several political figures offered their well wishes. Jon Husted (R) said he and his wife Tina "are praying for a quick and full recovery" for Kaptur. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) also said he was "praying" for his counterpart.

Kaptur narrowly defeated Derek Merrin (R) by 2,382 votes in the 2024 general election.
