For decades, the Philippine Sea has been viewed as the gateway through which US and allied forces would sail to defend Taiwan in a conflict with the Chinese mainland. However, analysts now suggest that rather than merely a transit route, the Philippine Sea could emerge as a critical battleground.

Northeast Asia hosts land-based missile networks that make naval operations near shore highly risky. As a result, the Philippine Sea would serve as a “decisive location for carrier operations,” according to Michael Bosack, director of the non-profit Parley Policy Initiative.

Bosack explained that in this area, the utility and capabilities of carrier groups can be maximized to shape the wider maritime battlespace. This positioning supports the creation of a regional buffer, frustrating foreign maritime forces before they can enter the conflict zone.

By deploying carrier groups in the Philippine Sea, China could not only intercept enemy ships but also deter potential adversaries from even initiating the long voyage toward Taiwan, Bosack said.

This analysis highlights the evolving strategic importance of the Philippine Sea amid increasing tensions in the western Pacific.
