TOKYOJapan and the United States carried out a coordinated intervention on Friday, August 1st, 2026, to support the yen, Japan's Finance Ministry officially confirmed on Monday morning, August 2nd. This marks the first joint currency market intervention by the two countries since 2011.

Prior to the intervention, the yen was trading near a 40-year low against the U.S. dollar. The coordinated action aimed to stabilize the yen amid this significant depreciation.

Following the intervention, Japan's Deputy Finance Minister Katayama stated that Japan "won't hesitate to act again" if necessary, indicating the country's willingness to undertake further measures to support its currency.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump commented that Tokyo sought "a little bit of help" from the U.S. regarding the yen intervention.
