Beijing has warned Manila that it possesses a "rich and powerful" set of options to counter any attempts to "make waves" in the South China Sea, according to a statement published on Sunday, August 2nd, 2026. The warning came from China’s military mouthpiece, PLA Daily, following Manila’s efforts to map out its claim to the disputed Scarborough Shoal, known as Huangyan Island in China and Panatag Shoal in the Philippines.

The PLA Daily article, authored under the pen name Jun Sheng or “Voice of the Military,” stated, “We also issue a stern warning to forces seeking to stir up trouble and make waves in the South China Sea: when it comes to safeguarding peace and stability there, the options in China’s toolbox are rich and powerful.” It further added, “Any malicious attempt to the detriment of China’s sovereignty, security and development interests will be met with a resolute response and a head-on blow.”

This warning followed joint naval and air drills conducted by the Chinese military near Scarborough Shoal. While the article did not specify the other options in Beijing’s toolbox, the drills were part of a broader range of countermeasures implemented over the weekend.

The ongoing tensions highlight the contested nature of the Scarborough Shoal area and the heightened military and diplomatic activity surrounding it.
