An explosion occurred on the evening of Saturday, August 1st, near an upscale restaurant on Kudrinskaya Square in central Moscow, killing at least three people and injuring over 20 others.
Russian authorities reported that a woman carrying a homemade explosive device attempted to enter the restaurant but was stopped by a security guard. The device detonated at the entrance, killing the woman, the guard, and a restaurant patron.
State news agency RIA Novosti reported that the blast happened shortly before 8 p.m. local time and injured at least 21 people. The restaurant's website stated the venue had been closed for a private event that day.
Heavily armed law enforcement officers sealed off the area and launched an investigation. Authorities have not yet identified suspects or motives behind the attack.
Russia's Anti-Terrorism Committee attributed the incident to the woman carrying the homemade device. The city has experienced several attacks since the start of the war in Ukraine in 2022.
Images shared on Russian Telegram channels showed emergency services at the scene. According to the Baza Telegram channel, a gas blast in the kitchen of the Italian cafe-restaurant Balzi Rossi, located in the wider city center, was also reported, though official sources have not confirmed this.
