Elijah Bieniemy, 27, son of Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, was arrested on Monday, July 28, 2026, following an incident in which he allegedly shot his mother, Mia Bieniemy, at their home in Ashburn, Virginia. Mia was found with multiple gunshot wounds but is now reported to be in stable condition.
Elijah faces charges including malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling, according to a press release from the Loudon County Sheriff’s Office. Court records indicate that Elijah will not make a court appearance until he has completed a mental-health competency evaluation. His public defender has argued that he "appears to suffer from significant mental health issues" and currently "does not appear able to assist in his own defense."
Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid expressed support for the Bieniemy family following the incident. He provided an update on Mia’s condition, noting she is out of the ICU and that Eric Bieniemy remains with her.
This development comes just nine days before the Kansas City Chiefs are set to face the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football to begin the 2026 NFL season.
