WNBA star Brittney Griner has filed for divorce from her wife, Cherelle Griner, after eight years of marriage. The Connecticut Sun player submitted the divorce petition on Thursday, July 31, 2026, in the Superior Court of Fulton County, Georgia, according to court documents obtained by ABC News.

The petition states that the couple, married in June 2018, have been separated since July 24, 2026, and that their marriage "is irretrievably broken" with "no hope of reconciliation." It requests that Brittney and Cherelle be awarded joint physical custody of their son Bash, born in 2024. Additionally, Brittney Griner seeks an "equitable division" of all marital debts and assets, described as "both real and personal, tangible and intangible."

This development comes four years after Brittney Griner was detained by Russian authorities in 2022 at a Moscow airport on charges of possessing vaping cartridges containing hashish oil, an illegal substance in Russia. She was held for 10 months, sentenced to nine years in prison, and released in December 2022 as part of a prisoner swap.

Cherelle Griner, an attorney, expressed her determination during a May 2022 interview with "Good Morning America," saying, "I won't go down until she's back ... every single day matters for me to be sound, for me to be alert, for me to be attentive, to make sure that she comes back." After Brittney's return to the United States, she publicly thanked her wife and others who advocated for her release.

A representative for the couple stated, "This is a matter we hope the parties can resolve privately. There is no further comment at this time."
