Unilever International, the distributor of Marmite in Singapore, has ceased supplying the popular yeast extract locally, leading to a sharp increase in online prices—some exceeding seven times the usual retail cost. The company acknowledged consumer disappointment over Marmite's unavailability in local supermarkets and cited ongoing supply challenges as the reason for discontinuing the brand in Singapore.
Marmite, a thick dark spread made from by-products of beer brewing, was invented in 1902 according to its official UK website. It gained historical significance during World War II when it was used as a dietary supplement due to its high vitamin B content.
Despite the halt in local distribution, Marmite remains a beloved staple for many Singaporeans who grew up enjoying it in various forms, from stirring it into hot water to spreading it on toast or incorporating it into local dishes.
Unilever has not provided further details on the supply issues leading to this decision.
