President Donald Trump on Wednesday, July 30th, 2026, claimed that the Supreme Court's decisions to strike down his emergency tariffs and executive order restricting birthright citizenship have cost the United States “trillions and trillions” of dollars. Writing on Truth Social, Trump questioned, “Does anybody have any idea how much Money and Prestige the United States Supreme Court has cost our Nation with their negative Rulings on Birthright Citizenship and TARIFFS? The answer, TRILLIONS AND TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS!”

The Supreme Court overturned two key policies from Trump's administration during its latest term. In February, the Court ruled that Trump lacked authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to unilaterally impose tariffs on trading partners. This ruling mandated restitution to companies that paid higher prices for imports, with Customs and Border Protection issuing approximately $104.29 billion in refunds.

Last month, the Court invalidated Trump's order requiring that a baby born on U.S. soil must have at least one parent with citizenship or permanent legal status to qualify for birthright citizenship. Conservative justices formed the majority against the administration in both cases, with Justice Amy Coney Barrett as the lone Trump appointee siding with the majority.

Although Trump had indicated earlier in July he would seek a rehearing of the birthright citizenship case, the Justice Department's deadline to petition for rehearing passed earlier this week.

Researchers from Princeton University, Cornell University, and Notre Dame University estimated earlier this year that beneficiaries of birthright citizenship contributed $7.7 trillion to the American economy through income from 1975 to 2024.
