On Wednesday, July 29th, 2026, President Donald Trump announced a comprehensive renovation plan for Dulles International Airport in the Virginia suburbs of Washington, D.C. The project will add more than 5 million square feet of new or renovated space, including the replacement of the current C and D concourses while preserving the airport's iconic original terminal.

Trump revealed the designs were selected after reviewing over 30 proposals from top architects worldwide. A key feature of the makeover is a "magnificent" multistory parking garage with 32,000 spaces, which Trump described as potentially the largest garage in the world.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy stated that the airport’s aging shuttle system, known as "people movers," will be replaced by a faster and more efficient "horseshoe rail system." He also noted the project's estimated $22 billion cost will not require federal funding, as participating airlines, including United Airlines, will contribute to the payment.

United Airlines confirmed in a news release that the renovation will include modernized concourses, an expanded main terminal, and upgraded boarding and ticketing facilities. Trump expressed hope that the project could be completed within two years, contrasting with the airlines’ original projection of 60 years for such work.
