Key Republicans in the Senate have delayed a Judiciary Committee vote originally scheduled for Thursday, July 30th, 2026, on United States President Donald Trump’s nominee for attorney general, Todd Blanche. Blanche, who currently serves as acting head of the Department of Justice (DOJ), faces opposition due to his close association with Trump and his involvement in a contentious legal settlement related to the president’s lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

Blanche previously served as Trump’s personal criminal defense lawyer before his DOJ appointment. The postponement reflects a significant hurdle in his confirmation process. A spokesperson for the Judiciary Committee stated late Wednesday that the vote would be postponed “as work continues to secure sufficient support” for Blanche.

The delay also comes amid Trump halting a $1.8 billion 'anti-weaponisation' fund following bipartisan backlash. Additionally, California Governor Gavin Newsom has indicated that the DOJ is investigating him.

Trump commented on the situation, suggesting that Senator John Cornyn might be displeased with him for not endorsing Cornyn, saying, “Maybe John Cornyn’s upset with me because I didn’t endorse him.”
