On Tuesday, a group of more than 100 House Democrats visited an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center in Dilley, Texas, and subsequently demanded its closure, citing concerns over the treatment of detainees.

Democratic Representative Luz Rivas of California, daughter of Mexican immigrants, described her experience as personal and condemned ICE officials, stating in Spanish, "for the people of the United States, we don't want to see our government, or ICE officials, acting like domestic terrorists."

Rivas also noted that her Los Angeles district experiences more ICE raids than any other area in her county.

Illinois Democrat Delia Ramirez delivered an emotional statement questioning whether any parent would not go to great lengths for their dying child. Ramirez criticized for-profit prison corporations and called for the abolition of ICE and dismantling of the Department of Homeland Security, highlighting concerns about inhumane conditions.

Reports from families at the detention center include allegations of constant lighting throughout the night preventing sleep and delayed or denied medical care by CoreCivic staff, even in cases involving life-threatening emergencies for children.

Texas Democrat Joaquin Castro participated in the visit to the Dilley facility, which has become a focal point for Democratic calls to end its operations.

The visit and subsequent criticisms come amid ongoing debates over immigration enforcement policies under the Trump administration, which is reportedly close to securing $70 billion in funding for ICE.

The controversy also includes images of ICE agents standing guard outside detention centers, such as one in Newark, New Jersey, where protests have occurred.

The Democrats' statements and demands reflect growing opposition to current immigration enforcement practices and conditions within detention facilities.
