For decades, physicists have sought to understand fundamental mysteries of the universe, such as why particles like protons have mass while light particles do not—a question central to the origins of planets, galaxies, and life itself.
However, recent actions by the Trump administration's "America First" policies have drawn criticism for potentially undermining U.S. scientific leadership. Last year, Russell Vought, then head of the Office of Management and Budget, canceled 284 Department of Energy grants. Court records revealed that these terminations were "based solely on the political identity of the grant recipient’s state," targeting researchers in blue states.
A public comment opposing the new proposed rule stated, “The United States built the greatest scientific enterprise in human history on a simple idea: fund the best ideas, chosen by the best experts, and get out of the way. This proposed rule dismantles that principle entirely, and it does so in ways that will cause immediate, concrete, and in many cases irreversible harm to American science.”
The controversy extends to National Science Foundation (NSF) grants. A 2024 report by Senate Republicans, using keyword searches for terms like “women,” “diversify,” “segregation,” and “Hispanic culture,” identified $2 billion in NSF grants they claimed supported "radical political perspectives." ProPublica’s investigation found many projects merely referenced existing social inequities or included unrelated flagged terms due to the committee’s crude methodology.
Meanwhile, the NSF’s Office of Inspector General reported recovering about $54 million over the past decade from fraud cases involving universities, nonprofits, and small businesses.
Internationally, the scientific community faces challenges as well. After Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, CERN’s governing body voted to ban scientists affiliated with Russian labs. This decision has harmed Russian scientists' careers and deprived CERN of valuable hardware and labor for future experiments.
The Royal Society of London, a scientific academy founded in the 1600s, historically appointed a foreign secretary to correspond with international scientists nearly 60 years before the British government established a foreign secretary role, highlighting the longstanding importance of scientific collaboration across borders.
These developments raise concerns about the future of American science and its ability to participate in groundbreaking discoveries.
