US President Donald Trump stated on Monday, July 28th, 2026, that Washington is engaged in "very friendly negotiations" with Iran after pausing military strikes last week. Speaking to supporters in Michigan, Trump expressed that there was "a good chance" of progress in talks aimed at ending months of fighting but warned that military action could resume if negotiations fail.

Despite these diplomatic efforts, tensions remain high in the region. The foreign ministry spokesman of Iran, Esmaeil Baghaei, clarified that Tehran is not directly negotiating with the United States but acknowledged that intermediaries may convey messages from the American side regarding ongoing developments.

Meanwhile, Oman announced a new shipping corridor through the Strait of Hormuz, coordinated with the International Maritime Organization and supported by the US. Iran, however, claimed this move violated a memorandum of understanding (MoU). On June 25th, a commercial vessel traveling along the Omani-approved route was struck off Oman’s coast, according to the British military.

Further complicating the regional situation, the Iran-aligned Houthis in Yemen declared a maritime blockade targeting Saudi ports. Additionally, Ukraine recently struck an Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea, intensifying the already widening confrontation.
