For years, the lab-leak theory regarding COVID-19's origin was widely dismissed by the scientific community, largely based on the March 2020 paper "The Proximal Origin of SARS-CoV-2," which was cited by fact-checkers and health officials to close the discussion.

However, Sen. Rand Paul’s recent investigation challenges this narrative. Newly released Slack messages reveal that Kristian Andersen, a key scientist involved, privately estimated a 30 percent chance of a lab origin and expressed discomfort with his conclusions, citing "smoking(ish) guns."

Further documents indicate that after the leak of the DARPA DEFUSE proposal—which detailed how to insert furin cleavage sites into bat coronaviruses—those involved discussed avoiding email and curating correspondence to evade Freedom of Information Act scrutiny. Holmes, a source cited by Paul, referenced a contact in China he called "my spy" and mentioned plans to communicate with intelligence officials and to "get something back to Tony's team at NIH."

On January 31, 2020, weeks before the publication of "Proximal Origin," Dr. Anthony Fauci instructed Andersen to report his concerns about the furin cleavage site to the FBI and the UK’s MI5. Fauci’s private notes from January 26, 2020, also indicated that the wet market was not the source of the virus but rather an amplifier.

Ralph Baric, a leading coronavirologist, had discussed coronavirus evolution and natural human adaptation as early as 2015. In January 2020, Baric briefed the Office of the Director of National Intelligence’s classified Biological Sciences Experts Group (BSEG), raising the possibility of a lab origin weeks before the theory was publicly dismissed. Documents also show that Customs and Border Protection (CBP) flagged Baric as an "extremely high person of interest" prior to his return from the WHO's origins mission in February 2021, citing his extensive collaboration with the Wuhan Institute of Virology and his role in channeling NIH funds toward gain-of-function research.

Sen. Paul asserts that these records expose a coordinated effort by scientists, intelligence officials, and Dr. Fauci to suppress evidence supporting the lab origin theory. Dr. Fauci is scheduled to testify before Sen. Paul's committee under subpoena on July 29, 2026.
