Authorities in Michigan have identified Kristopher Karolkiewicz as the man who fatally shot his wife, Amanda, and their six children, aged five to 15, before setting their home on fire in Grand Haven Township on Friday, July 25th, 2026. The Ottawa County sheriff’s office, citing autopsy results, confirmed that all family members died of gunshot wounds and that Karolkiewicz subsequently shot himself. The deaths of Amanda and the children were ruled homicides.

The sheriff’s office also stated that the fire, which occurred on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, was intentionally set in multiple parts of the house after the killings, though the exact point of origin remains under investigation. Sheriff Eric DeBoer described the incident as "an unspeakable tragedy that we may never completely understand," in a statement read by Deputy Captain Jacob Sparks.

This incident marks at least the 13th mass murder reported in the US so far in 2026, according to the non-partisan Gun Violence Archive. Additionally, it is among more than 270 mass shootings recorded across the country this year. A July 2023 investigation by the Indianapolis Star found that family annihilations occur on average every five days in the US, highlighting ongoing concerns about the lack of a nationwide strategy to address this type of crime.

Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, had been a vice-president of sales and marketing for the American Heart Association from September 2023 until earlier in July 2026, according to a statement from the organization. He and Amanda met in 2008 while working at a beverage company and began dating that summer, as noted in a parenting blog maintained by Mandy Karolkiewicz over a decade ago.
