Former chief White House medical adviser Anthony Fauci is scheduled for a high-profile Senate hearing on Wednesday, July 28, 2026, shortly after Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) released more than 1,000 pages of Fauci’s private diary entries from the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. Paul argues these writings reveal discrepancies between Fauci’s public statements and private discussions regarding the origins of the virus.

In the days leading up to the hearing before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, Paul also released approximately 500 additional pages of Fauci’s work records and emails spanning from 2001 to 2015.

Fauci, who served as the longtime director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), last appeared before Congress over two years ago during a contentious House hearing reviewing his pandemic tenure. Wednesday’s Senate hearing is expected to be similarly intense.

Fauci has publicly maintained that the virus likely originated naturally from an animal reservoir but acknowledged on May 26, 2021, that no one is 100% certain of the origin and called for a thorough investigation amid speculation about a lab leak.

He has also criticized Senator Paul’s claims about gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, stating, “Senator Rand Paul who continues to lie egregiously about the gain of function research which he claims was done at the Wuhan Institute of Virology funded by NIAID.”

In addition, Fauci called former Speaker Kevin McCarthy an "amazing coward" after McCarthy called for Fauci’s firing in June 2021.

Celine Gounder, an infectious disease specialist and epidemiologist, commented that the release of thousands of pages of Fauci’s documents shortly before the hearing appears more as a distraction than a significant revelation.
