President Donald Trump has urged Senate Majority Leader John Thune not to allow the United States Senate to recess until the Safeguard America Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act is passed. Trump emphasized this on Truth Social on Monday, stating that Thune should either pass the bill or "TERMINATE THE FILIBUSTER," enabling Republicans to swiftly pass the SAVE America Act, the budget, and address the looming debt ceiling setback.

Trump's call comes as the Senate prepares for its annual August recess, a period often used by lawmakers for campaigning during midterm election years. Despite the packed Senate schedule, which includes major confirmations and sanctions packages, Trump’s priority remains the passage of the SAVE America Act.

Senators Mike Lee (R-Utah), Rick Scott (R-Fla.), and Ashley Moody (R-Fla.) have publicly announced their intent to object to any recess until the bill is passed. Lee specifically requested a roll call vote to block the recess, stating his objection to any effort to put the Senate into recess in August before the SAVE America Act is approved.

Moody echoed the call, asserting that the chamber should cancel recess until the election integrity legislation is enacted. The political reality in the Senate, including the need for a likely 60-vote threshold even if the bill is passed via a budget resolution, poses challenges to the bill’s passage.

The SAVE America Act has faced obstacles in both chambers, with some House Republicans, including Chip Roy, opposing efforts to attach the bill to the National Defense Authorization Act earlier this year.

Trump criticized Senate leadership, suggesting Democrats will act swiftly on their priorities once in control, and expressed frustration with the current Senate leadership’s handling of the bill.
