Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the French ambassador to Tehran on Monday, July 27, 2026, to protest the conduct of two French diplomats who were briefly detained earlier this month. The ministry's spokesperson, Esmaeil Baqaei, stated that the diplomats "interfered in Iran's internal affairs under the pretext of engaging with civil society," actions which he said were "in no way justified under the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations."

Baqaei emphasized during a weekly press briefing that the French government must cease such actions and interference "under misleading labels."

On July 20, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot reported that the two diplomats were targeted by Iranian officials the previous day, experiencing "an extremely serious act of intimidation" by the Islamic Republic's security services. According to Barrot, both diplomats were "detained for several hours without reason, interrogated, and one of them was physically abused" before returning to the embassy.

This diplomatic incident highlights ongoing tensions between Iran and France concerning diplomatic conduct and internal affairs.
