House Republicans are traveling across the United States during the August recess, aiming to find positive angles in a challenging midterm election environment as they begin a 100-day push to Election Day.

Despite mostly unfavorable public polling, GOP leaders are emphasizing recent legislative successes, including the passage of a stock trading ban, a stopgap funding bill to prevent a government shutdown, an annual defense policy bill, and a reconciliation framework addressing Pentagon funding, farm aid, and voting restrictions advocated by former President Trump. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) stated on Wednesday, July 23rd, “We just proved you wrong,” in response to skepticism about major legislation passing in an election year.

However, the annual defense policy bill faced delays due to opposition from hard-line conservatives within the party.

Polling data presents a challenging outlook for Republicans. As of Friday, July 25th, Decision Desk HQ reported that Democrats hold a 4.1 percentage point lead over Republicans on the generic congressional ballot, which measures general election support. CNN data analyst Harry Enten highlighted a Fox News poll showing Democrats with a 10-point advantage over Republicans on trust to handle inflation—a significant reversal from October 2024 when an ABC poll showed former President Trump leading former Vice President Kamala Harris by 6 points on the issue. Enten commented, “If these numbers hold, it’s very hard to imagine that Republicans are able to hold on to the House of Representatives when on the number one issue, the Democrats are trusted by 10 points.”

Republicans are also attempting to associate all Democrats with far-left candidates who have recently won primaries, aiming to sway voter perception ahead of the midterms.
