On Monday, July 27, 2026, Europe's satellite operators Eutelsat and SES announced they are set to receive approximately $6.1 billion in combined payments for clearing satellite spectrum to facilitate U.S. wireless services.

Under a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) framework approved recently, satellite services will be moved out of part of the C-band radio spectrum. This will free up 160 megahertz of capacity for telecom companies to deploy next-generation wireless networks.

Eutelsat expects to receive $504 million in pre-tax payments, while SES anticipates about $5.6 billion. These payments are contingent on the companies relocating their satellite services from the spectrum by deadlines in 2030 and 2031, respectively, while maintaining uninterrupted service for their customers. Additionally, both companies will be reimbursed for eligible transition costs.

The FCC's approval marks a significant step in reallocating spectrum resources to support expanding mobile network demands in the United States.
