On Sunday, July 26, 2026, GOP Rep. Mike Turner, an Ohio Republican, stated that the United States should maintain pressure on Iran to deter its pursuit of a nuclear weapon. However, Turner conceded that President Donald Trump has limited options in the ongoing conflict and negotiations, especially as "Iran has a vote."

Turner praised a declaration made at the July summit of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), which affirmed that Iran should never acquire a nuclear weapon. Speaking to ABC News' "This Week" co-anchor Martha Raddatz, Turner described Iran as a global threat and said, "A nuclear Iran is not where the world wants to be."

He further noted that the NATO summit "validated certainly what the White House has been saying," calling the situation "an important stake in the ground" and describing the conflict as "inevitable."

Regarding efforts to end the war, Turner acknowledged the difficulty of the process and recognized bipartisan frustration on Capitol Hill with how the war is being prosecuted. He said, "Bringing the war to an end certainly is a difficult process."

At the start of the conflict, President Trump had indicated the war would lead to regime change in Iran but later shifted public focus to ending Iran's nuclear ambitions.

Additionally, U.S. Central Command released footage on July 25, 2026, showing operations enforcing a naval blockade against Iran.

Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen was quoted saying, "When you're digging a hole, you just stop digging, and my view is that's what we should do," reflecting calls to end the conflict.
