Donald Trump is set to address the rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Association (WCHA) dinner on Friday, July 24th, 2026, three months after the original event was abruptly halted when an armed assailant attempted to storm the venue with the alleged aim of assassinating him.

The dinner, now downsized and relocated to the Waldorf Astoria—formerly the Trump International hotel—was moved from its traditional larger venue at the Washington Hilton. Enhanced security measures will be in place following the disruption caused by California resident Cole Tomas Allen's failed attempt to enter the ballroom where Trump, his cabinet, and hundreds of journalists were present.

Organizers and Trump have framed the event as a defiant reaffirmation of free speech principles guaranteed by the US Constitution's First Amendment. WCHA president Weijia Jiang described the decision to restage the dinner as "a statement that violence has no place in American life and a free press will not be intimidated into silence."

However, the rearranged dinner has faced criticism from retired journalists and press freedom groups, who have condemned it as "hypocritical." They urge the association to confront Trump over his administration's intensified attacks on the media. A letter signed by 520 journalists from eight media campaign groups—including the Committee to Protect Journalists and the National Association of Black Journalists—highlighted concerns over recent subpoenas demanding phone records of New York Times journalists and their relatives following reports on security breaches involving the new Air Force One jet, a gift from Qatar.

The letter also criticized Trump for threatening to revoke licenses of broadcasters deemed unfavorable. It stated, "We believe it is hypocritical to celebrate the first amendment in front of the man who relentlessly attacks it. We urge the WHCA to condemn the administration’s actions from the podium and pledge to fight all attempts by his administration to undermine this core pillar of a functioning democracy."

Notably, Melanie Trump and JD Vance will be absent from the event. Writing on his Truth Social platform, Donald Trump said he had yet to decide whether to deliver his originally intended speech.
