On Wednesday, July 22nd, 2026, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a GOP-backed budget resolution by a 216 to 214 vote. This resolution sets the stage for a $95 billion reconciliation package aimed at funding the ongoing Iran war, providing aid to farmers, and implementing elements of President Trump's voting regulations bill known as the SAVE America Act.

All Democrats, two Republicans, and one independent who caucuses with Republicans opposed the measure. House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, described the resolution as the GOP's "best shot" to enact as much of the SAVE America Act into law as possible.

The resolution now moves to the Senate, where it faces significant challenges. Republicans are pursuing the reconciliation process because it allows passage by a simple majority, bypassing Democratic opposition. Warren Davidson of Ohio noted that Vice President JD Vance recently visited the Capitol to rally House Republicans behind the plan.

Democrats remain strongly opposed to continued funding for the Iran war and the strict voting requirements proposed in the SAVE America Act. Critics have also raised concerns about the lack of a clear plan to finance the $95 billion package.
