President Donald Trump has expressed support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino to become the next secretary-general of the United Nations, according to a report by the New York Post. Trump believes Infantino is "respected by everyone around the world" and that the world "recognizes he has a special ability to bring people together," a source told the Post.

The endorsement follows the recent FIFA World Cup 2026, held across three countries, where Infantino played a prominent role. Trump was present at the final match on July 19, 2026, at the New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, where Spain defeated Argentina 1-0. Trump and Infantino jointly presented the FIFA World Cup winner's trophy to Spain’s captain Rodri.

Trump highlighted Infantino's experience managing over 200 FIFA member associations, noting the similarity to the UN's 193 member states, suggesting this background equips Infantino well for the UN role. However, Infantino has faced criticism from some global soccer organizations, notably after reversing a red card for Team USA player Folarin Balogun during the World Cup.

Before assuming the UN secretary-general position, Infantino would need endorsement from all 15 members of the UN Security Council and confirmation by the General Assembly.
