On July 17, hours after Israel’s parliament formally dissolved and set elections for October 27, an Israeli drone struck a funeral procession outside Ahmad Yassin Mosque in the Nuseirat refugee camp, killing at least eight mourners burying a man killed earlier that day.
Between July 13 and 20, Israeli attacks killed at least 57 Palestinians, including six children and eight women, according to the UN human rights office, which warned the pattern raises concerns over violations of international humanitarian law and possible war crimes in Gaza.
On July 18, an Israeli warplane struck a residential building in Gaza City’s Nassr neighborhood without warning, killing Adham Nasman, his wife Marwa, and three of their children; a third child survived as he was not home.
Amid these attacks, Israel’s Defence Minister Israel Katz expressed satisfaction with the destruction in northern Gaza, stating on Channel 14 that it resulted from a deliberate Israeli policy.
Meanwhile, Israel’s Crimson Thread barrier project continued with the destruction of Palestinian water infrastructure in the northern Jordan Valley. Israeli forces and settlers destroyed three artesian wells near Atuf, confiscated pumps and generators, and severed approximately 800 meters of pipeline serving 4,500 dunams (4.5 square kilometers) of farmland, according to the Atuf Village Council.
On the night of July 19, Deir Jarir, east of Ramallah, experienced a lethal raid involving a large military operation and an attempted settler theft of about 70 sheep. Two men, Ahmad Abu Makhou, 26, and Odeh Farakhna, 53, died from gunshot wounds. Witnesses gave conflicting accounts on whether soldiers or settlers fired the fatal shots.
In at-Tawani, Masafer Yatta, settlers burned the village mosque, two homes, and a dairy factory on July 18 and 19. One assailant left graffiti boasting, “I’m under house arrest,” according to local sources.
These events coincide with Israeli ministers rushing to pass legislation before parliament dissolved, the Civil Administration issuing demolition and land-seizure orders, and settlers attacking Palestinians with near-total impunity.
