Italian authorities seized approximately 1,700 pounds of cocaine skillfully concealed among pallets of bananas at the port of Vado Ligure on Tuesday, July 22, 2026. The shipment, arriving from one of Ecuador's main ports, contained 650 packages of what officials described as "extremely pure cocaine."

The seizure is considered one of the largest anti-drug operations at the port in recent years. Italian officials estimated the drugs could have generated nearly $290 million (250 million euros) if sold on the street market.

The bust followed an extensive analysis of commercial shipping routes between South America and Vado Ligure, a key gateway for goods entering Europe and an "attractive" target for international drug traffickers, according to Italy's Guardia di Finanza.

"The operation forms part of an ongoing and targeted effort to combat the international trafficking of narcotics, including efforts to protect the most vulnerable segments of the population, who are often exposed to the harmful effects of this type of criminal activity," the Guardia di Finanza said.

Separately, Fox News reported that 14 individuals were charged in an alleged cocaine ring operating near a schoolyard in the United States, with commentator Jeanine Pirro calling out the accused as "dirtbags."
